Updating interior of rented home, on the cheap- tips needed?

Posted by admin in modern style interior design on 05 29th, 2009

I live in a rented house and want to update the living room on the cheap. It has a red carpet and curtians which I don't want to replace. What is the most contemporary style to paint/decorate the walls and create a clean modern look that will go with the red soft furnishings? Any style tips to inspire modern design? I am taking my time to look for new ideas so hope to get some creative input here. Thanks.
Any photo links or websites would be great. Thanks.

IKEA's website has great ideas for decorating with bold colors. I would go with a cream color for the walls and furnishings to provide a clean yet warm contrast. Use reversible throw pillows to add color accents in the room - soft oranges and yellows for warm weather months and browns or purples for winter months

What is a good house for my Sims 2 family?

Posted by admin in modern style interior design on 05 18th, 2009

I have a new family, one adult couple, two teens (one boy, one girl), and a small pet dog. I am looking for a house with 3 bedrooms 1.5-2 bathrooms (preferably one on each floor), a living room with a TV, either a game room or home office with a computer, and a one or two-door garage with a (sport-)car(s). I’d also like the rooms to be modern but still simple. And the house must have a kitchen with good appliances, a dog bed, a dog dish, and a few other pet items. It would be nice to have a pool/hot tub too. Price is no object but I don’t really want a huge fancy 3-story mansion.

I have the following Sims 2 Expansion Packs:
Glamour Life Stuff
IKEA® Home Stuff
Kitchen & Bath Interior Design Stuff
Nightlife
Pets
Seasons
and Teen Style Stuff
I was thinking of something sort of like this: http://thesims2.ea.com/exchange/lot_detail.php?asset_id=741692&searchPage=exch&search=1&asset_type=lot&key=&order=CREATION_DATE+desc&nrows=8&game_version=&custCont=&zoneType=-1&lotSize=&lotLevel=&apartmentSize=&lotValue=&familyFund=&familyWorth=&familySize=&locality=&country=&view=feature&hideFramework=&languageCode=
but with a garage and some pets stuff.
It DOESN'T have to be like that! It was just a suggestion as to the type of place I'm looking for..

first, that looked like a pretty cool house.

second, you should get teen style stuff because of the teens. also, nightlife because of the vehicles so the teens could drive theirselves to school instead of having a school bus picking them up everyday for school.

National Historic Place Register…could my house be on it?

Posted by admin in modern style interior design on 05 10th, 2009

ok so my house was originally built in 1825 and was supposedly a stop on the underground railroad. throughout its history, some noteable people and families have lived there (maybe not ntl. names, but def local for my city) it was also designed by a famous architect in my city in 1900, after it burned down. since then, the interior style has remained much the same, with some exeptions including the kitchen (modern appliances, style and the paint and architecture throughout the house, which isnt anywhere close to what the original color scheme would be. also, the exterior is painted an olive green, as opposed to the original white. do you think that it could possibly be added to the nhpr (dont know if thats even what its called but u kno what i mean right??)
o ya and when it burned down in 1900 the walls still stayed in tact so the original 1825 walls are still there, they just changed the style and built a 2nd floor….
o yess and also the first governor of my state (unnamed for privacy reasons) most likely brought the gingko tree in our back yard over from china…and general lafayette (from rev. war) visited our house at one point

Yes It Seems a Very Historical House! Your Very lucky to Live There,I think it could defiantly be on the NH PR but a quick call would settle that!

6460-9-9 - Cyan Design Cadwell 9 Lt Chandelier

The Cadwell family of light fixtures is distinguished by the exotic ornamentation of decorative cord tassels. This treatment, the addition of tassels on light fixtures, dates from the 15th century when cord tassels were added to give a touch of colour, texture and visual interest to the gilded ironwork of Spanish lantern. Over he next few centuries, tassels made from a variety of fibres were added to the numerous typesof interior furnishings, but reached international popularity during the mid Victorian period. At this time, tassels became associated with things Turkish and Egyptian, coinciding with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Cord tassels have since never been out of fashion, and the Cadwell fixtures, with their traditionally inspired designs, continue the long-standing practice of cord tassel ornamentationCADWELL 9LT CHANDLR-ET

FLT - Period Arts Flute Ceiling Fan

FLT - Period Arts Flute Ceiling Fan

Dark Bronze finish on fluted body with matching canopy. Optional light available with opal shade and incandescent or energy-saving compact fluorescent lamping.More Details (+)Around 1800, Greek architecture as seen through the medium of etchings and engravings gave new impetus to Neoclassicism, now called the Greek revival. Although at first look this reintroduction of classic forms seems reactionary, it was really a response to the excess of Rococo and should be seen as a precedent to the modern era. It was a search for the ideal of Greek purity among the cacophony of nineteen-century design. In American architecture, Neoclassicism was one expression of the American Renaissance movement, ca 1880-1917. One of the pioneers of this style was Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who is often noted as America’s first professional architect and the father of American architecture. The Baltimore Basilica, the first Roman Catholic cathedral in America, is considered by many experts to be Latrobe’s masterpiece. The last manifestation of this American classic style was in Beaux-Arts architecture and its large public projects were the familiar Lincoln Memorial, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the American Museum of Natural History’s Roosevelt Memorial. The Greeks did not have ceiling fans but turn-of-the-century Neo-classic and the earlier antebellum architecture should have. Period Arts Fan Company offers the Flute fan as the perfect solution for your Renaissance interior.

I am also looking for any books including house plans, style of homes, modern buildings, styles of architecture and more. I also perfers bigger lots of magazines/books to make it worth the trip.

People who are good with colors!! I will really appreciate your help! A contemporary media room advice, please?

Posted by admin in modern style interior design on 05 4th, 2009

Hello! Me and my husband want to furnish a contemporary/modern-style media room for movies & gaming and lounging.

The room already has parquet.. So that is unchangable.. We want to work around the parquet and see what colors would make the room look best without changing it.

Now, the room is already painted, but we MIGHT consider painting over it if it means getting the room to look better. I'm just worried it'll ruin the parquet somehow :\

A picture of the room during the night:
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee24/dewyn/night.jpg

and during the day:
http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee24/dewyn/day.jpg

What I want advice on is:

1) if you were to work on the same paint & parquet colors; what colors of furniture would u furnish the room with? (please include google-image-search pics if you can)
2) if u think the wall paint should be changed, what color paint and what colors for furniture will look best? (please include google-image-search pics if you can)

I'm asking because I'm not good at all with interior design. I might post this question another time during the night to get to different users' answers. I really need all the help I can get!

Thanks!
Close-up of the parquet:

Thanks. I'm REALLY considering changing the wall color now.. so what color paint/furniture do you guys think will look the best?
I'm really enjoying the answers I'm getting! Do you guys also think that lime-green(not the blinding kind) on the walls and white furniture would go well, too?

More suggestions, please! :D
So you want to ttry and go a little darker, so that the room feels a little warmer. Try a dark green on the walls, dark brown furniture with straight lines, a nice area rug and nice dark window treatments. Also, if its in your budget, get adjustable lighting, so you can dim the lights for movies, or have them up for visiting.

other good color options: Dark maroon on the walls, with black or brown furniture.

Blue on the walls with dark beige furniture,

Or, dark brown on the walls, beige furniture.

Keep things kinda simple, nothing distracting in the room, so no busy area rugs. Keep lines simple and straight, colors medium to dark, and everything in your color preferences :)
